Steinegger war von 1970 bis heute im Einwohnermeldeamt Uri (Staatskanzlei) tätig, zuletzt als stellvertretender Leiter des Amtes. 1981 gründete er in Altdorf seine eigene Anwaltskanzlei. 1988 war er Präsident des Schweizer Tourismusverbandes und von 1989 bis 1991 Zentralpräsident des Schweizer Alpen-Clubs. Er ist in zahlreichen Verwaltungsräten tätig, unter anderem als Präsident der Baryon AG und des CSC Impresa Costruzione SA sowie Mitglied des Verwaltungsrats der Dätwyler Holding. [1] Seit 2004 ist er Präsident des Verkehrshauses der Schweiz in Luzern. Von 1991 bis Ende 2013 war er im Verwaltungsrat der Schweizerischen Unfallversicherungskasse (Suva) [2] tätig Stiftungsrat der Schweizerischen Rettungsflugwacht als Vizepräsident (Rega).
Steinegger ist zudem Präsident des Verbandes Schweizer Anschlussgleise und privater Güterwagenbesitzer (VAP). Als Folge dieser Funktion wurde er 2008 als Mediator eingesetzt, um Meinungsverschiedenheiten zwischen der SBB-Geschäftsleitung und den Streikenden von SBB Cargo beizulegen. [3] Er ist auch Vorsitzender der HIG Immobilienanlagestiftung. [1]
Im Februar 2012 übernahm Steinegger, zuvor Mitglied des Verwaltungsrates, das Amt des Präsidenten der NZZ Mediengruppe vom zurückgetretenen Konrad Hummler. [4] An der Generalversammlung im April 2013 schied er wegen Überschreitung der gesetzlichen Altersgrenze aus dem Verwaltungsrat aus, Nachfolger wurde Etienne Jornod. [5] Steinegger ist zum zweiten Mal mit der Rechtsanwältin Ruth Wipfli verheiratet, mit der er einen Sohn (*1993) hat; aus seiner vorherigen Ehe ging Matthias Steinegger (* 1976) hervor. Er führt mit seiner Frau die Anwaltsfirma Steinegger & Wipfli Steinegger in Altdorf UR. [6] Steinegger ist Einwohner von Flüelen. [1] Er hatte den Rang eines Leutnants in der Schweizer Armee.
Steinegger ging 1973 in die Politik, als der Gemeinderat in seiner Geburtsstadt Flüelen ein neues Mitglied suchte. Steinegger nahm sofort zu und blieb bis 1986 im Gemeinderat, von 1983 bis 1986 als Bürgermeister. Von 1977 bis 1984 war er Präsident der FDP Uri. Durch seine akribische Tätigkeit als Leiter des Krisenstabs Uri während der Wirbelstürme 1977 und 1987 erhielt er den Spitznamen “Katastrophe Franz”.
Steinegger war von 1980 bis 2003 Nationalrat. Von 1989 bis 2001 war er Präsident der FDP Schweiz. Steinegger war ein bekannter Politiker in der Schweiz. Seine Politik, die FDP als progressive, von links und rechts unabhängige Partei zu profilieren, konnte jedoch den Sturz der FDP und das Wachstum der rechtskonservativen SVP nicht verhindern.
Nach der Zwangspensionierung von Bundesrätin Elisabeth Kopp im Jahr 1989 galt Steinegger als potentielle Ersatzkandidatin. Dass der Luzerner Kaspar Villiger schließlich von der Bundesversammlung gewählt wurde, hatte vor allem zwei Faktoren:
Als Vertreter einer winzigen kantonalen Minderheitspartei fehlte Steinegger an Einfluss.
Steinegger lebte danach mit seiner Freundin zusammen, obwohl er noch verheiratet war.
1999 wurde er vom Bundesrat im Notfall erneut gerufen: Er wurde zum Präsidenten der Expo.02 ernannt, mit dem Auftrag, das katastrophale Schweizer Nationalausstellungsprojekt zu retten. Dies wurde durch eine Größenänderung erreicht, und die Expo.02 war ein großer Erfolg. Aufgrund der zögerlichen Kooperation der Schweizer Wirtschaft wurden jedoch weitere Staatskredite benötigt. Dieser regulierende “Sündenfall”, den Steinegger befürwortete, erzürnte die Rechte, die jede Regierungsaktion misstrauisch war, selbst innerhalb von Steineggers eigener Partei. Nach dem Zusammenbruch der Swissair 2001 erfolgte eine ähnliche Geldspritze, die das Überleben einer Schweizer Fluggesellschaft sichern sollte. Einige FDP- und SVP-Anhänger halten Steinegger seither für zu links.
Obwohl Steinegger im Bundesrat als offensichtlicher Nachfolger von Kaspar Villiger galt, dauerte es lange, bis er nach seinem Rücktritt 2003 seine Kandidatur bekannt gab. In der internen FDP-Kandidatenauswahl unterlag er jedoch Christine Beerli und Hans-Rudolf Merz diesmal. Diesmal waren die Ursachen:
Nach den Bundestagswahlen vom 19. Oktober 2003 rutschte die Partei nach rechts ab, als sie stark beschädigt wurde.
Steinegger galt als Symbol des gescheiterten Staatsinterventionismus, der für den Untergang der Partei verantwortlich gemacht wurde.
Die politisch verbundenen Steinegger-Mitglieder aus der Westschweiz sowie die Damen neigten zu Christine Beerli aus Bern.
Der schon lange politisch engagierte Steinegger wirkte im Vergleich zur dynamischen und weiter rechts stehenden Po erschöpft klagenden Quereinsteiger Hans-Rudolf Merz.

Als Konsequenz trat Franz Steinegger aus der Politik zurück und übernahm 2004 das Amt des Präsidenten des Verkehrshauses der Schweiz in Luzern.

With the help of a four-year dual degree program at Loyola University Chicago, I was able to get both a B.S. and a Master’s degree in Software Engineering in four years. Internal IT at Hewlett-Packard (HP) was my first job after graduating. After that, I moved on to Red Hat, where I’ve stayed for the last decade. To think that it’s been ten years already is surreal.
Even though I’ve faced a few huge roadblocks in my work, the little things get to me. My female coworkers are thought to be more technical than I am, so anytime I attend an external or new client meeting, I have to remind them of my technical talents and background. Despite presenting myself with my technical title, I’ve had to get used to being asked, “Are you the project manager or are you the marketing representative?” for the last decade. Microaggressions like this may be draining.
The opportunity to work with Red Hat in New York City was one of the most significant in my career. Moving from Austin, Texas, to New York City proved to be a difficult decision, but I have no regrets about taking advantage of it. I’ve learned a great deal from this experience, both professionally and emotionally. Everyone should take advantage of the chance to live and work in a different location to broaden their outlook. Although it wasn’t customary for kids in the ’90s to have a home network, my father had constructed a modest website that served as our home page for accessing essential family connections like email. About 12 years ago, piqued curiosity led me to examine his source code. So, I decided to learn how to code websites on my own by taking free online courses from w3schools.com, one of the most prominent free educational websites. My interest in web programming skyrocketed after that. Working on a few consulting projects to construct websites while still in high school gave me the confidence to consider a career in the computer sciences.

For the Daffodil Festival today, June 11, and the Styriarte in July, the Grundlsee and Toplitzsee create an idyllic area that magically draws visitors. In a graceful motion, the plate flies over the Toplitzsee. A passenger yells, “Soda, give me some gum!” to the helmsman. He has a smirk on his face. When given time to consider his response, he says, “I’m not in a rush.” The frantic passenger relaxes quickly. Several of his other passengers join in the laughter, which he intended to impress with the order. In the Dead Mountains, a waterfall plunges almost vertically down a cliff face. It’s not for everyone that the first day of school seems like a separate time zone. People who stayed for two days report feeling just as calm as those who stayed for a week or more. Grundlsee, a town of 1240 people, has a new doctor and celebrates her appointment as a climatic health resort by throwing a massive party. TCM doctor and general practitioner Drechsler challenges the spa visitors with a unique perspective on the concept of a spa (see bottom right: “Cure with nature”).
